Oxygen is a key component to a healthy start to your ferment. Other methods of aerating your wort either require exhausting amounts of shaking a carboy, or "fish pump" methods that risk contamination. By using pure oxygen you reduce the amount of time needed to about 1-2 minutes, and limit the possibility of contamination.
